The city of Salta is known for its Hispanic architecture, characterized by single story houses as well as narrow streets and sidewalks highlighted by the green on the surroundings hills.
A tour around the city will allow people to discover museums, churches and big old houses that were built during the colonial period. If one has the chance to go to Salta,it´s impossible to miss visiting the 9 de Julio Square. In the place Hernando de Lerma founded the city of Salta in 1582.
One side of the square The Basilica Cathedral is located. This remarkable building was constructed in 1858 and has an outstanding altar completely made of gold.
Inside the Cathedral are situated the images of Lord and virgin of the Miracles, the patron saints of Salta. The historic Town Council is situated on the other side of the Square opposite the cathedral.
Along Caseros street the San Francisco Church is observed. Its terracotta walls and huge tower characterize this church. A few blocks ahead the Convent of San Bernardo is located.
It´s famous for the remarkable hand carved entrance hall that built by the original natives of Salta in 1762.
The tour would not be complete if the tourist does not visit the MAAM inside the museum are the mummies of Llullaillaco, 500 years old.
